  5.     Richard Berendzen won't be getting his $1 million severance
  6. package from American University after all. But everything
  7. considered, he can hardly gripe. Berendzen resigned as
  8. president of the Washington institution last April after making
  9. repeated obscene telephone calls from his office to a woman in
  10. Virginia. Last week, following a campus-wide uproar over their
  11. largesse, the trustees struck a more modest deal: Berendzen
  12. will be retained as a tenured senior physics professor at a
  13. salary "appropriate to his faculty rank," somewhere around
  14. $70,000  a year, and will begin teaching in the spring of 1992.

  16.     The original $1 million offer had prompted three weeks of
  17. campus protests. Many students and faculty members denounced
  18. the deal as a cop-out for the university and a windfall for
  19. Berendzen. Last week's compromise got a better reception. Said
  20. Diane Jackson of the Undergraduate Student Confederation: "This
  21. is a compassionate solution that will allow Dr. Berendzen and
  22. the A.U. community the time they need to heal." Still, many
  23. faculty members are hoping that by the spring of 1992,
  24. Berendzen will choose to go elsewhere.
